It appears spring has sprung early in Central Arkansas, at least that’s what the hundreds of daffodils in bloom atop Wye Mountain want us to think.
The 46th annual Wye Daffodil Festival is underway, and spending an afternoon frolicking through fields of flowers is a great excuse to make the 33-mile trip out of Little Rock for the day. The festival is from March 2-10 this year at 22300 Highway 113 in Bigelow.
A crowd showed out for the first day on Saturday. Dozens of cars lined both sides of the highway near Wye Mountain Community Church in the afternoon, letting out attendees old and young to saunter through the seven acres of daffodils.
Mary HenniganThe festival is free, and while there’s live music, crafts and food available, the main appeal seems to be the endless amount of photo ops. The flowers make for a great backdrop to any selfie, family photo or seasonal shot of the kiddos. Lots of parents were posing their babies in the flowers on Saturday, and because the flowers don’t grow very tall, babies make for the perfect height.
Pets — maybe the only other thing right at the appropriate height for the daffodils — are welcome, so long as they stay on a leash in the designated area.
The forecast is looking pretty good for the next week, save for a day or two of rain. If the skies stay clear, there’s a chance the festival could extend into the third week of March.
