A loaded gun was confiscated from a child on Friday at an elementary school in Alexandria, police said. No injuries were reported.

The student brought the gun in a book bag to the Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy and “voluntarily mentioned in conversation with their teacher that they had the gun,” Alexandria police said in a statement.

The teacher “immediately” took the bag and notified school authorities, and police were called. “To our knowledge, no other children observed the weapon or were aware of its existence,” police said.

Police said they responded “within minutes” and secured the gun. They said a member of the child’s family told investigators the gun belonged to them. The weapon remains in police custody.

Police said they are working with Alexandria City Public Schools to investigate the incident and are in consultation with the office of the commonwealth’s attorney.
