Another day, another big high school football program opens.

Clinton High School athletic director Brad Spell confirmed with HighSchoolOT this morning that head football coach Cory Johnson has stepped down after meeting with Clinton City Schools Superintendent Wesley Scott Johnson on Friday.

Multiple independent sources to HSOT have pointed to Johnson, a former defensive coordinator at Scotland County High School, re-teaming with other coaches in his network at a high school in South Carolina.

Johnson led Clinton to a 15-1 overall record and to the N.C. High School Athletic Association's 2A state championship game last fall. Clinton lost to Reidsivlle, 28-18.

The Dark Horses brought Johnson in to take over the program as a first-time head coach in 2018. Over his six seasons, Clinton made the NCHSAA playoffs each time and won five conference championships. The Dark Horses sent multiple prolific players to the Power 5 level of college football.

Johnson's record at Clinton concludes at 61-12 overall.
