There were moments in the early stages of Friday's second-round N.C. High School Athletic Association 2A girls basketball game that suggested underdog Southeast Alamance had taken great pains to scout top-seeded North Pitt.

The Stallions worked their halfcourt offense to precision and got free for some layups. They appeared to be open.

Then the gaps closed and a player from North Pitt would come in a swat it away from behind.

Such is life playing against the Panthers, who rolled into the third round with an 86-62 win.

North Pitt (25-3), who will now host Nash Central on Tuesday, was up 41-24 at halftime against the first-year Stallions (20-8) after jumping out to a 22-8 lead in the first quarter.

N.C. State recruit Zamareya Jones had 35 in the win for the top-seeded Panthers, while Southeast Alamance — a team with no seniors or juniors — got 24 points from Shaniya Paylor.
