Maryland men’s basketball assistant coach Mike Jones is set to be named head coach at Old Dominion, people familiar with the hiring process said Thursday.

An introductory news conference is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. Friday, several days after former Old Dominion coach Jeff Jones announced he would be retiring because of health-related issues.

This will be the first college head coaching job for Mike Jones, who spent this past season with the Terrapins under second-year coach Kevin Willard following a two-season stint as an assistant at Virginia Tech. Before that, Jones served as the head coach of Washington-area high school power DeMatha from 2002 through 2021, succeeding Basketball Hall of Famer Morgan Wootten.

Jones directed the Stags to a 511-119 record during his 19 seasons at the Hyattsville, Md., school, including a national title in 2006. He coached nine players currently in the NBA while at DeMatha, plus Maryland’s current leading scorer, Jahmir Young.

The Terrapins have struggled in what will be Jones’s lone season in College Park, taking a 15-14 record into Sunday’s final home game against Indiana.

In his two seasons at Virginia Tech, the Hokies were 42-28 overall and 19-21 in the ACC. In 2021-22, Virginia Tech went 23-13 and won the first ACC tournament championship in program history.

At DeMatha, Jones won nine WCAC regular season titles, eight WCAC tournament championships and four Maryland private school tournament titles.

In addition to his experience developing high school players, Jones has extensive ties to USA Basketball. He has been a 22-time USA Basketball coach, most recently as the 2021 Team USA under-16 coach. After serving in three coaching roles with USA Basketball in 2019, Jones was named a co-recipient of that year’s USA Basketball developmental coach of the year award.
