High winds swept across the D.C. region Wednesday night and knocked out power to more than 14,000 customers in Northern Virginia and Maryland suburbs, area utilities said.

The National Weather Service reported wind gusts that reached nearly 60 mph at Dulles International Airport just before 9 p.m. and more than 40 mph gusts in other areas, all caused by a strong cold front.

Late Wednesday, Dominion Power reported about 12,000 outages scattered across Northern Virginia, with thousands of customers without power around the Fair Lakes and Sugarland areas.

More than 2,000 customers lost power in Maryland, with a cluster of outages in the Aspen Hill area of Montgomery County, according to Pepco outage maps.
