Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders is in talks to become Ajax's next manager, talkSPORT understands.

The Dutchman has already confirmed he is leaving Anfield this summer alongside Jurgen Klopp.

Lijnders going to Ajax would see him reunite with former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, who now plies his trade with the Eredivisie outfit after tearing up his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq.

The 41-year-old joined the Reds from FC Porto in 2014, later making his way up as Klopp's right-hand man.

Long pencilled in as a future head coach, Lijnders will leave Liverpool after a decade with at least eight winner's medals in tow.

Ajax are in the midst of one of their worst-ever Eredivisie seasons, and are also on their second manager of the campaign.

His replacement, John van 't Schip, has steadied things, but only signed on an interim basis and now looks very likely to be replaced this summer.

It was announced that Lijnders would follow Klopp by leaving Liverpool on January 26, with fellow assistants Peter Krawietz and Vitor Matos also stepping away.

Klopp made it clear the Dutchman was looking to step up in the dugout, saying: “Pep especially is ready – ready to manage a football team and he wants to do that as well, so that’s great, together with Vitor.
