Alstom, renowned for its commitment to smart and eco-friendly transportation solutions, has launched the Low Emission Access to Public Transport (LEAP) program as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility efforts. The initiative aims to enhance last-mile connectivity, promoting increased usage of public transportation. In the initial phase of the project, electric autorickshaws provided by MetroRide will serve as last-mile transport options from Yelachenahalli and Indiranagar stations of the Namma Metro in Bengaluru. As a proactive measure to promote gender inclusivity in urban mobility, MetroRide, an AI-driven EV ride-hailing service catering to daily commuters, has trained approximately 25 female drivers to operate these electric rickshaws in the specified area.
Speaking at the launch of the program, Olivier Loison, Managing Director, Alstom India said, “Namma Metro will play a significant role in easing the on-road movement challenges in Bengaluru and as leaders in sustainable mobility there could be no better way for us to encourage public transport than LEAP. Through our partnership with WRI India and leveraging the innovations brought to the table by an Alstom-mentored startup, MetroRide, we have taken a noteworthy step in bridging the last mile connectivity challenge with this program. Together, we’ll leverage innovation and expertise to implement solutions that elevate the metro experience, making it more accessible, efficient, and environmentally friendly”.
Bengaluru, renowned for its bustling streets, holds the distinction of being one of the world’s most congested cities, boasting the highest number of private cars in India. Despite the rapid expansion of the metro service in recent years, a recent survey conducted by WRI India has shed light on a significant issue: 70% of commuters feel discouraged due to inadequate last-mile connectivity to the Bengaluru Metro. Women, who make up only a small fraction of metro users, encounter additional hurdles stemming from unsafe or inconvenient last-mile connections and the prevalent underrepresentation of women in the predominantly male transport sector. LEAP aims to tackle these challenges head-on by not only enhancing women’s access to the Bengaluru Metro but also actively fostering their participation as drivers in the transport workforce. This multifaceted initiative is poised to create a more inclusive and sustainable urban mobility environment.
Speaking at the occasion, Prof. Rajeev Gowda, Vice Chairman, State Institute for the Transformation of Karnataka; Ex Member of Parliament; Member of Brand Bengaluru Committee said, “This is a wonderful initiative on many fronts. It empowers women to become auto drivers, thus breaking into a male-dominated profession. Electric autos which facilitate public transport move us on the path toward a sustainable future. Let’s empower more women to take the wheel and drive towards a more inclusive and safer Bengaluru.”
Mr. Srinivas Alavilli, Fellow, WRI India said, “Our collaboration with Alstom and MetroRide is founded on a commitment to data-driven decision-making in public transport. Addressing the critical last-mile connectivity gap prevalent in India’s metro networks, our joint efforts aim to provide commuters with a safe, low-cost, and low-emission mode of transport within the city. Beyond revolutionizing the daily commute, LEAP is dedicated to fostering sustainable livelihoods, particularly for our women driver partners. This initiative not only bridges gaps in urban mobility but also propels a socio-economic shift, underscoring our commitment to creating positive and lasting impact in the communities we serve.”
WRI India plays a crucial role in the success of LEAP, actively engaging in detailed commuter surveys and facilitating focus group discussions involving both commuters and auto drivers. Continuing their assistance, they collaborate closely with MetroRide, actively contributing to the development and testing of LEAP’s operational framework. Through evaluating service progress and analyzing insights, WRI India aids in implementing a data-driven approach to enhance the project’s effectiveness.
Alstom continues to uphold its commitment to sustainable mobility through strategic investments via CSR initiatives. Partnering with NRSCEL, IIM Bangalore’s startup incubation center, Alstom launches the Sustainability Incubation Program. This pioneering initiative supports startups dedicated to combating climate change and addressing various sustainability and mobility challenges. The inaugural cohort of the Sustainability Incubation Program successfully nurtured ten ventures, with the second cohort currently underway.
Building upon this dedication, Alstom unveils LEAP as a flagship initiative within its impact portfolio, targeting the resolution of last-mile connectivity challenges and the promotion of sustainable mobility across India. The program is set to encompass additional metro stations, thereby enhancing metro ridership by providing connectivity to high-frequency hubs.
