A distinguished contingent representing the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board, India, led by Shri Vivek Shrotriya (IAS), Additional Managing Director of MPTB, joined a prestigious Indian delegation in Thailand for the exhibition of sacred relics associated with Lord Buddha and his disciples. Facilitated by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, this significant occasion marks the inaugural presentation of these revered relics in unison.

Originating from the 4th and 5th centuries BC, the relics were discovered during excavations at Piprahwa by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in the 1970s. Treasured by Buddhist adherents globally, these artifacts are believed to trace their roots to ancient Kapilavastu. Commencing on February 22nd at the Sanam Luang Pavilion in Bangkok, the exhibition features solemn rituals and sacred chants, spanning four cities and venues across Thailand over a 26-day duration.

Madhya Pradesh, renowned as a prominent center of Buddhism, actively contributes to this religious endeavor spearheaded by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Utilizing cutting-edge technology, the state offers virtual reality (VR) experiences of its sacred sites to visitors attending the exhibition, including the iconic Sanchi Stupa—a UNESCO World Heritage site celebrated for its ancient Buddhist legacy.

As part of the exhibition, relics of Sariputta and Maha Moggalayan, esteemed disciples of Lord Buddha, have been transported from Sanchi to Thailand alongside those of Lord Buddha himself. This symbolic gesture emphasizes the profound spiritual bond between Madhya Pradesh and Buddhism, reaffirming the state’s dedication to preserving and promoting its cultural heritage globally.

Madhya Pradesh’s involvement in this historic event not only highlights its sacred legacy but also strengthens cultural bonds between India and Thailand. Through the sharing of Madhya Pradesh’s spiritual treasures, the delegation aims to foster deeper appreciation and understanding of the timeless teachings of Lord Buddha and the enduring influence of Buddhism.
