Mira Costa boys volleyball wins Varsity Classic Tournament

The Mustangs defeated Huntington Beach in three sets in the first tournament of the regular season

The Mira Costa boys volleyball team kicked off the season winning the Varsity Classic, hosted by both Redondo and Mira Costa.

Mira Costa defeated Huntington Beach 21-25, 25-21, 15-10 in the finals. The Mustangs had playoff wins over Peninsula (25-17, 25-9), Buchanan (25-14, 25-17) and San Marcos (25-12, 25-17) to advance to the finals.

Senior outside hitter Victor Loiola earned tournament MVP honors. Alex Heins (middle blocker), Andrew Chapin (setter) and Stone Seligson (opposite) earned all-tournament honors for the Mustangs.

Mira Costa had wins over Chatsworth, Newbury Park and Torrance in pool play.

Redondo finished third in the tournament. The Sea Hawks defeated Wiseburn (25-19, 25-17) and Chatsworth (25-20, 25-12) in the playoff bracket to advance to the semifinals. Redondo lost to Huntington Beach (24-26, 25-16, 17-15) in the semifinals.

Luke Goldman (opposite) and Drew Blair (outside hitter) were all-tournament selections for the Sea Hawks.

South Torrance finished ninth. Wiseburn Da Vinci (11th), Peninsula and El Segundo were in a tie for 13th, Torrance (18th) and Bishop Montgomery finished in 21st-place.

In the Silver Division, Torrance lost to St. Francis (25-19, 25-12) in the championship match.

Palos Verdes Distance Day recap

The track and field season is underway. Saturday, Palos Verdes hosted Distance Day. Here are some highlights:

Peninsula’s Alexandra Himebauch finished third in girls 800 meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 26 seconds. South Torrance’s Maddie Mummery (2:28) and PV’s Jordan Hernandez (2:28.53) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

PV’s Kate Sherry was second in the 1600 with a time of 5:11.96.

In the Girls 3200, West’s Alexis Wolfinger finished first (11:26.92), followed PV’s Ivanka Malysheva and her West teammates Ainsley Paulson (third), Rayna Carranza (fourth) and Sofia Lorenzo (fifth).

Palos Verdes girls 4×400 relay (Sarah Barnes, Hernandez, Natalie Wang and Brette Andrews) finished first with a time of 4:18.29.

Alex Naehu was first in the Boys 800 Meter Run (1:56.49). He also finished fourth in the 1600 (4:31.25).

Mary Star’s Finn Babbitt won the 3200 Meter Run (9:35.20), followed by Peninsula’s Oliver Macfarlane.

Naehu was also part of PV’s 4×400 boys relay team that finished first. Michael Mackiewicz, Vytas Vitkus and Mattias Nelson were the other members of the relay team.

CS Dominguez Hills men’s basketball nearing outright CCAA title

The Toros clinched at least a share of the CCAA Conference championship with their 80-67 win over Cal Poly Humboldt Saturday.

CSUDH (22-5, 17-4) can clinch the outright conference title with a win against Cal State L.A. Thursday.

Jeremy Dent-Smith (Serra HS) is the leading scorer for CSUDH at 17.1 points per game. Alex Garcia (Rolling Hills Prep) is averaging 8.1 points per game.
