Re: Los Angeles County government is the modern day Tammany Hall

I feel the need to respond to the recent piece in which my opponent, the disgraced former Sheriff Alex Villanueva, mocked the special needs camp my granddaughter attended for years and mocked my son Mark’s involvement with its board.

Camp Yakety Yak is a camp for children with autism. It does amazing and important work.

I am proud my son chose to go into public service. His experience working with the kids of Camp Yakety Yak and raising my granddaughter has shaped my work serving children with special needs. It is why the LA Found program I launched provides free trackable bracelets to families raising children with autism so we can find them if they wander and go missing. It is why I helped the LA County Fire Department launch special training so our first responders know how to interact with children on the spectrum.

And I am not taking advice on corruption from Mr. Villanueva. He spent his four years as sheriff using his office to go after political opponents, attack journalists, and undermine any oversight of his department, which is why, after a lengthy investigation by a county board, he was placed on the “Do Not Rehire” list.

Janice Hahn serves on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, representing District 4.
