REYNATIS is a brand new action RPG from developers FuRyu and Natsume Atari, and it's launching in the West in Fall 2024 on Switch.
The game was revealed during the Japanese Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase this week, but publisher NIS America revealed earlier today that the game would be making its way overseas as well.
Initial trailers have drawn comparisons to Final Fantasy Versus XIII, which would later become Final Fantasy XV, and Verum Rex — which if you've rolled credits on Kingdom Hearts III, you'll be very familiar with. And with the blend of modern-day scenery, anime-esque character designs, and flashy action combat, it's easy to see why.
There's an all-star lineup working on the upcoming action RPG — Kazushige Nojima is the scenario writer, and he's worked on multiple Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts titles, including this week's Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Also joining him are Kingdom Hearts, Legend of Mana, and Super Mario RPG composer Yoko Shimomura, artist Yasutaka Kaburagi, and Trinity Trigger director Takumi Isobe.
Reynatis takes place in modern-day Shibuya, Tokyo, where magic is suppressed. Marin, a wizard, arrives in the city and crosses paths with Sari, an officer of the MEA who works to keep the wizards under control. Sari also can use magic, but she uses this to protect the city and keep order in Shibuya. When the two meet, however, things change...
You must decide whether to Suppress your magical abilities so that you can avoid combat, talk to civilians, and explore Shibuya as a normal citizen. Alternatively, Liberate your magical abilities to stand up for what you believe in and explore hidden parts of Shibuya only accessible to wizards. Reynatis aims to "painstakingly recreate" Shibuya in-game and will include many famous locations such as the SHIBUYA109 shopping mall.
Reynatis launches in Japan on 25th July, and the Western release will follow in the Fall. In the meantime, check out more details on the game's official website.
What do you think of Reynatis so far? Will you be keeping an eye on this? Warp down to the comments and let us know.

Just watched the trailer and it looks awful they're clearly just using Nojima and Shimomura's names to sell a sub par game like a couple of recent crappy horror games have done with Akira Yamaoka
Looks like my type of game, but I really wish it was included in the US/EU Partner Direct as well. Kinda seems like they don’t have much faith in the western release.
Wonder how the performance will be. Might pick up, looks interesting
I can't imagine a worse way to sell a game than saying "from the Kingdom Hearts writer"!
@jump yep - immediately put it off my radar
I was quite disappointed with Trinity Trigger, and this has the same director on board, but I will try to stay open minded, as this does sound kind of promising. I do like a good action RPG, so fingers crossed for this one. Sounds like it could launch around the same time as Ys X, though, which will be a priority for me.
Wonderfully generic!
The comments here (so far) are drastically different from Twitter, where every post I saw was basically begging for this to come to the West. I will wait for reviews but I'm optimistic, especially with Shimomura involved.
@jump I was worried about that
Urban Fantasy. Nice!
Yoko Shimomura. Great!
Writer from KH. Uh...
The trailer took me back to the 2000s jrpgs. Don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing
Urban fantasy feels like it means different things for Japan compared to the U.S.
I feel like western urban fantasy is a lot less flashy than the stills here look.
I'd be in for modern, western, urban fantasy, but this. . . I'll probably pass.
Looks like my type of RPGs, if it ever comes physically to Switch I may check it out.
For some reason, the titles these guys put out always feel like HD ports of portable games to me. I don't even mean that as a bad thing because I really like the style they go for, but I'm curious if it's an artistic choice, has something to do with their engine, or what.
That trailer looked cooler than literally anything I saw at the partner direct.
The stiffness of character animations is what looks the worst about this game, but otherwise, 2015 me would be super pumped! 2024 me on the other hand... Might wait for a Switch 2 port with better performance...
@jump @Bobb Also the FF7 fanfic writer. Not exactly high praise for a game. So we can expect a terrible convoluted mess of a story. At the least we should get some banger songs, so the game being made is worth alone for that.
@jump How about "the Final Fantasy X-2.5 novel writer?"
@jump From the Mario Odyssey writer? There are plenty of games where that "boast" would sound worse. Nomura's the main overseer of KH, though, so it's pretty misleading since all the KH-isms are Nomura's. It'd be better to point out that he's the writer of the original FFVII.
@XenoShaun How can he be the FF7 fanfic writer when he's the writer of the original FF7?
@jump My thoughts exactly. The Kingdom Hearts series has some of the absolute worst writing I've ever encountered in video games, and considering how much bad writing you encounter in this media, that's quite an achievement!
Uffff looks pretty generic in general, imo...
@jump I could not have said it better! To me that is an instant "Hard Pass" on this game.
