Mykhailo Mudryk was savaged for his role in Virgil van Dijk's winning goal that spelt Carabao Cup final heartbreak for Chelsea.

The 23-year-old has failed to find his feet at the Blues since joining in a £88million deal from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023.

Mudryk has netted just three times in 34 Premier League outings, with his biggest success in a Chelsea shirt coming in the Carabao Cup.

The Ukrainian proved the hero in the quarter-final win over Newcastle but he went from hero to zero against Liverpool at Wembley.

With the game deadlocked at 0-0 and drifting towards penalties Mudryk was stationed at the near-post for a late Liverpool corner.

The winger was left without a Reds rival to mark with his only job to clear a corner taken to the near-post.

However, Mudryk was caught out when Kostas Tsimikas' delivery came in as Van Dijk ghosted in from behind to rise highest and flick home.

As the Liverpool captain wheeled away to celebrate Mudryk got an earful from defender Axel Disasi before he sunk to the turf.

The attacker also came in for fierce criticism from talkSPORT's Gabby Agbonlahor, who posted on X, formerly known as Twiiter: "I wouldn’t trust Mudryk to run my bath."

Fans online agreed, with one adding: "As a Chelsea fan myself I have to agree, Gab…"

Mudryk was introduced ahead of extra time when the scores were deadlocked and Chelsea struggling to find a breakthrough.

He had just 11 touches, losing possession four times and he failed to have a single shot throughout his 30 minutes on the pitch.

His horror show comes just a month after Chelsea reportedly blocked Bayern Munich's attempts to lure him away from Stamford Bridge.

Mudryk had an ineffective cameo off the bench

Mauricio Pochettino explained last week that he wanted Mudryk to 'feel the pain' of not being a regular starter.

"It is part of the evolution, the development," said the Chelsea boss ahead of the club's 1-1 draw with Manchester City.

"I think that you need to feel sometimes the pain when they don't play, young guys also, because it's always so easy and it's difficult to grow, be more mature and find out how to improve.

"I think the most important thing is how you are going to manage this situation and then it's always up to him to push the limit, or reach the limit we think that they have. It's always a massive challenge for our coaching staff."
