
ALBANY, N.Y. — In their final home game of the regular season, the UAlbany Great Danes showcased a dominant defensive performance, defeating the UMass Lowell River Hawks with a final score of 59-39 at the Broadview Center in Albany, N.Y.
The game started with UAlbany taking an early lead after UMass Lowell received a technical foul before the tip-off. The teams exchanged baskets in the opening minutes, with the Great Danes gradually building an 8-5 advantage. A scoring run of 8-2 extended UAlbany’s lead to 16-10 with 1:44 remaining in the first quarter, which closed with the Great Danes holding an 18-14 lead.
Entering the second quarter, UAlbany continued to assert their dominance, scoring six unanswered points to establish a 24-14 lead at 7:37, marking the first double-digit lead of the night. Lilly Phillips contributed to the lead by turning a steal into a fastbreak layup, giving UAlbany a 30-20 advantage at halftime.
The second half began with both teams trading baskets for about four minutes. UAlbany maintained control, utilizing strong defense and attacking the paint to create scoring opportunities. A 6-2 scoring run closed out the third quarter, with the Great Danes holding the River Hawks scoreless for nearly five minutes.
Heading into the final quarter with a rekindled offense, UAlbany displayed versatility in scoring, putting up 10 unanswered points. Although UMass Lowell answered with a 9-4 scoring stretch, UAlbany secured the victory with a final score of 59-39. This win marked the second time this season that UAlbany defeated UMass Lowell, completing the sweep.
Freshman Deja Evans delivered an outstanding all-around performance, recording 15 points, seven rebounds, and four blocks. Senior Kayla Cooper contributed 10 points and led the team with five assists. Phillips led the defensive effort with three steals. UAlbany shot 55.6% from the floor, compared to UMass Lowell’s 31.4%, and dominated in rebounding, winning the battle 28-22 and outscoring the River Hawks in the paint, 36-16.
With this victory, UAlbany improved their record to 23-4, with a conference record of 12-2 in America East. The Great Danes now look ahead to their final regular-season games on the road against New Hampshire on February 29 and Maine on March 2.
