An arrest has been made in the theft of an ambulance by a man in a medical gown who walked out of Inova Fairfax Hospital last week with an IV stuck in his arm, the Fairfax County police said.
The privately owned “MMT” medical transport ambulance was recovered in Annandale later on the night of Feb. 19, police said.
Matters began about 12:30 p.m. that day, when police said they received reports of a stolen sedan near the Fair Oaks Mall. They saw the vehicle leaving the mall parking lot, heading eastbound on Route 50, officials said.
Police said the driver saw the officers, accelerated and quickly drove toward the westbound Interstate 66 ramp. Police said the car went up an embankment and flew against the concrete wall lining the ramp.
After the crash, police said, five occupants of the vehicle, all adults, were taken to a hospital. On Tuesday, police said none of the injuries was life-threatening.
Police said they charged the driver, who remained at the hospital, with grand larceny. A rifle and a pistol with an obliterated serial number were found in the crashed vehicle, police said.
Police said that after being taken to the hospital, one of the vehicle’s occupants, donning a medical gown, walked away with an IV still in his arm. The man then jumped into the ambulance and drove away, police said.
Later that night, police found the stolen vehicle abandoned in the 4200 block of Annandale Road, officials said. Officers searched the area but did not find the man.
