A Johannesburg doctor was hijacked and robbed of his belongings while driving on the N3 highway near Vosloorus on Saturday night.

He had been driving on the N3 from Newcastle to Johannesburg when he was stopped by five men driving a white double cab with blue lights, three wearing police uniform.

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the suspects took the doctor into a maize field where they robbed him of his Mercedes Benz vehicle as well as jewellery, medical equipment, and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Two men held him captive while others went to an ATM to withdraw money from his account.

Masondo added that the doctor was left in the maize field but was able to walk to the main road where he was assisted by a passing car and helped to call the police.

Meanwhile, the suspects also hijacked a family on the same road and kept them captive. One of the victims, the driver, was stabbed.

The family has since been found.

"A case of car hijacking, kidnapping, and armed robbery has been opened for investigation. Police are searching for the suspects," added Masondo.
