Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recently highlighted significant opportunities to bolster trade relations with African nations, emphasising their potential to import textiles along with jute, and jute products, from Bangladesh.

This assertion came following discussions between Prime Minister Hasina and Ghana’s minister of foreign affairs and regional integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, in Dhaka, culminating in an agreement between Bangladesh and Ghana.

M Nazrul Islam, the Prime Minister’s speechwriter, elaborated on the multifaceted cooperation envisioned between Bangladesh and Ghana.

This collaboration spans diverse sectors, including agriculture, information technology, pharmaceuticals, food processing, jute, leather, and garments.

The Ghanaian minister expressed optimism about enhancing bilateral engagement, recognising the abundant opportunities for trade expansion between the two countries.

Additionally, Ghana sought Bangladesh’s support for its candidature in the upcoming election for the secretary general of the Commonwealth, scheduled for October.

This position, traditionally held by a representative from an African nation, underscores the importance of Africa within the Commonwealth framework.

Both Bangladesh and Ghana are eager to capitalise on untapped trade potential.

Sheikh Hasina’s remarks underscore the commitment to foster stronger economic ties, leveraging Bangladesh’s strengths in jute and textiles to benefit both nations.
