Farmers protest: X suspends accounts but disagrees with government’s order
The social media giant added that the platform is acting under potential threat of significant fines and imprisonment.

Social media platform X, formerly Twitter, has taken down posts and accounts related to the farmer’s protests in compliance with the executive order issued by the Narendra Modi led government.
Through a social media post on Global Government Affairs, X handle, the Elon Musk led platform confirmed its compliance with the executive orders demanding the suspension of specific accounts and posts.
Though the social media giant took action to withhold the identified accounts and posts within India, it has expressed its disagreement with government directives, stressing its commitment to freedom of expression.
The social media post added that the platform is acting under potential threat of significant fines and imprisonment. Nonetheless, in a move to challenge the government’s demands, X has filed a writ appeal, which is currently pending.
The Global Government Affairs further stated that the Indian government has issued executive orders requiring X to act on specific accounts and posts, subject to potential penalties including significant fines and imprisonment.
It noted that in compliance with the orders, they will withhold these accounts and posts in India alone, however, they disagree with these actions and maintain that freedom of expression should extend to these posts.
It further underlined that being consistent with their position, a writ appeal challenging the Indian government’s blocking orders remains pending. It asserted that they have also provided the impacted users with notice of these actions in accordance with our policies.
Earlier in 2023 the former CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey had claimed that the Indian Government had threatened the company with raids on employees and shutdown if it did not take down posts critical of the government during the farmers protest 2020-2021.
In 2021, the Centre asked twitter to block certain hashtags. Initially Twitter (now X) accepted the demand but later gave up on the decision saying that the justification is insufficient.
Meanwhile, farmers, who resumed their protest yesterday after snubbing off a government proposal, have delayed their agitation today following the death of a young farmer on the Punjab-Haryana border.
