Steamboat Alpine team has six skiers in state’s top 20; Nordic team to send nine to state

The Steamboat Springs Alpine ski team skied by the ABCs this season, which stands for “Always Bring Courage.”

Last week, 13 members of the team traveled to the Loveland Ski Area for the Alpine State Championships on Thursday and Friday. 

Emma McHaffie was the top Sailor girl in Thursday’s giant slalom races, taking 17th at 1 minute, 50.81 seconds. Nolan Laird took 20th for the boys at 1:50.83, and Wyatt Graves was 23rd. 



The slalom races were hosted Friday, and senior Liz Lipscomb had the best finish for the Steamboat girls, taking 14th on a combined time of 1:47.64. She had the 14th fastest time in both of her two runs.

Finishing 32nd in a field of 43, freshman Beira Lawrence was the only other Steamboat girl to complete both runs.



Three Steamboat boys finished in the top 20 slalom skiers on Friday. Baron Fleming led the charge in 14th at 1:48.34. Michael Hagney was not far behind in 16th, and Quinn Skinner took 19th.

With the Alpine high school ski season wrapping up, heads are turning toward the Nordic Skiing State Championships, which will run at Snow Mountain Ranch Nordic Center in Granby and be hosted by Middle Park High School. 

Steamboat Springs will have nine athletes representing the Sailors at the championships, which begin Thursday with the individual start 5-kilometer skate and continue into Friday with the 5-kilometer mass start classic race. 

Competing for Steamboat will be Evie Fisher, Charley Barnes, Lucy Capra, Wren Capra, Aspen Bennett-Manke and Novella Light for the girls team and Conner Frithsen, Colin Clark and Erick Yeiser for the boys team.
