A soft slab avalanche was reported on Berthoud Pass Tuesday afternoon that was triggered by a backcountry rider, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.
The avalanche report states that a solo rider triggered the slide, then was carried and partially buried Feb. 20 in the Fingers on Berthoud Pass. The area locally known as the Fingers is west of the summit on the pass.
Although the reporting party did not make contact with the person involved in the avalanche, a beacon search was conducted where tracks were discovered leading back up to the road. It appears the person dug themselves out, according to the avalanche report.
The person lost at least one ski, according to Greg Foley with Grand County Search and Rescue.
Foley says there is a correction to the initial avalanche report published on CAIC’s website. The report incorrectly states it was a snowboarder that triggered the slide when it was actually a skier.
