Thol Thirumavalavan, the leader of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), has announced the party’s decision to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections not only in Tamil Nadu but also in four other states – Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Telangana. Seeking to secure the pot symbol for his party, Thirumavalavan approached the Election Commission of India, emphasizing the VCK’s expansion beyond its home state.
Addressing reporters in Chennai, Thirumavalavan highlighted the VCK’s plans to nominate candidates in multiple states and underscored the significance of obtaining the pot symbol from the independent symbols list. He expressed the party’s readiness to participate in the democratic process across different regions and reiterated its commitment to representing the interests of marginalized communities.
Although Thirumavalavan was unable to meet the Chief Election Commissioner personally, he confirmed that the VCK’s petition had been submitted to the relevant department. This move signals the party’s proactive approach in preparing for the upcoming electoral contest and underscores its determination to secure adequate representation for its constituents.
In addition to its electoral ambitions, the VCK has also voiced opposition to the proposal for One Nation One Election, arguing that such a move would undermine parliamentary democracy and pave the way for autocratic rule. Thirumavalavan affirmed the party’s intention to raise concerns with former president Ram Nath Kovind, who heads the committee exploring the feasibility of simultaneous polls.
Responding to queries about alleged pressure from the DMK to contest elections under the rising sun symbol, Thirumavalavan clarified that the VCK had opted to contest independently in the past and would continue to do so. He emphasized the party’s commitment to representing all sections of society and reiterated its demand for a general seat from the DMK-led alliance.
