Fire investigators have been unable to determine the cause of a rowhouse fire on Saturday in Northwest Washington that left an 84-year-old man dead, according to police and fire officials.

D.C. police identified the victim as Charles Glenn, who lived in the building that burned.

The fire broke out shortly after 9 p.m. in a three-story rowhouse in the 700 block Rock Creek Church Road NW, near the Petworth neighborhood.

Vito Maggiolo, a spokesman for the D.C. fire department, said the fire began on the second floor. A police report says a person who was in an apartment noticed smoke and fire coming from the victim’s apartment next door, and tried to put it out with a fire extinguisher.

The report says that person failed to extinguish the flames and was forced out by the smoke and heat. Several other residents of the building also left.

Firefighters took about 20 minutes to bring the fire under control, Maggiolo said, and found the victim unresponsive. The police report says Glenn was pronounced dead at the scene.

Maggiolo said Wednesday the cause of the fire has been labeled undetermined. He said the cause does not appear to be suspicious.

Efforts to reach Glenn’s relatives were not successful.
