Breeze Airways has announced a purchase of 10 more A220-300 planes, escalating its total confirmed orders for this model to 90. This acquisition positions Breeze as the third highest purchaser of the A220 globally.
The A220 is celebrated not only for its enhanced passenger comfort but also for its significant contributions to reducing operational expenses and environmental footprints for airlines. Capable of covering distances up to 3,600 nautical miles or 6,700 kilometers, the A220 stands out for offering a 25% reduction in fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions per seat in comparison to aircraft from the preceding generation. It is the sole aircraft specifically designed for the 100-150 seat segment, incorporating cutting-edge aerodynamics, innovative materials, and the newest generation of Pratt & Whitney’s GTF™ engines. This leads to a 50% decrease in noise levels and about 40% reduction in NOx emissions relative to current industry benchmarks. Like other Airbus models, the A220 can operate using up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with Airbus targeting the capability for its planes to run on 100% SAF by 2030.
The first Airbus A220 was received by Breeze in December 2021, and as of the end of January 2024, the airline operates 20 of these aircraft across the U.S. Furthermore, Breeze has plans to transition to an exclusively A220 fleet for its commercial flights by the close of 2024.
With the A220 having been delivered to over 20 airlines and utilized across five continents, including a recent expansion into Oceania, it has proven to be the ideal choice for a mix of short and long-haul routes. Over 100 million passengers have experienced flights on the A220, which now serves more than 1,350 routes to over 400 destinations worldwide. By January 2024, approximately 30 clients have placed orders for over 900 A220s, reaffirming its dominance in the market for smaller single-aisle jets.
