After inspecting the accident-prone Poroscodem junction of National Highway 66, Pernem MLA Pravin Arlekar directed PWD officials and the highway contractor to expedite construction of the service road.
The villagers told Arlekar that accidents occur here daily, resulting in numerous fatalities.
Students, dairy farmers, and senior citizens encounter significant challenges in crossing or walking along the highway due to lack of a service road and pedestrian crossings, they said.
Despite appeals to authorities through letters and resolutions, villagers said that their concerns have been met with only assurances and no tangible solutions.
They have urged the government to recognise the severity of the situation, as lives are
at stake.
After listening to the grievances of the affected individuals, Arlekar directed the PWD officials and the highway contractor to expedite construction of the service road.
Expressing dismay at the loss of lives due to neglect of past elected representatives, Arlekar requested the installation of traffic signals at the Poroscodem junction and, until their installation, the deployment of a traffic police staff for commuter safety.
