Mooney: Aspen airport and protecting the environmental future

Earth science has never been better with all kinds of scientists on the ground and new satellites hundreds of miles above recording ocean temperatures and hundreds of other datasets.
For the record, I am in favor of remodeling the local airport terminal. Keep the baggage claim as it is, you know it’s part of that reuse, reduce, recycle and refuse mindset. Bump out the check in toward the drop-off curb and add a second floor only above the northern half of the terminal for airport offices, a meditation room which can double as an overnight sleeping area and an employee break room.
Now that The Pentagon is going 100% green with photovoltaic panels and nearby Dulles airport is installing a 100 megawatt system on 835 acres it’s high time that Pitkin county does the same covering most of the acres of vehicle parking and that’s a lot of panels. Time for Pitkin County to partner with a solar developer, it’s a business now.
If you are still for widening the runway, might your grandchildren ask you, “What did you do to protect my environmental future?”
