There’s an RTÉ that you and I know, the one that we believe we pay for. The RTÉ of sunny spells and scattered showers, and drumming TV news bulletin theme tunes that soundtracks dinnertime, bath time and bedtime.

There’s the RTÉ of spinning fortune wheels and evening soap operas, and Sunday games in familiar stadiums. There’s the RTÉ that lets us watch ourselves compete to be the ­fittest or the slimmest, or the owner of the most enviable house of gleaming glass and polished marble.
