UNC softball edges out UCF 2-1

— The North Carolina softball team (5-1) gritted out a 2-1 victory over UCF (4-2) in their first win of the Shriners Children's Clearwater Invitational on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Tar Heels improved to 4-0 all-time against the Knights.

Senior left-handed pitcher Bailey McCachren shined in the circle, tossing a complete game with more than 100 pitches thrown, allowing just one earned run and six hits with three strikeouts in the victory.

Senior second baseman Skyler Brooks went 3-of-3 at the plate, her fourth multi-hit game this season, and tallied the RBI that tied the game up in the bottom of the fifth. 

Freshman left fielder Sanaa Thompson scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth, making it home from first on freshman Kate Bubela's first collegiate hit.  

Notables:

Alex Coleman, Carsyn Snead and Autumn Owen have reached base in all six games to start the season. Coleman and Snead are also both on a six-game hitting streak

Today's victory was McCachren's second complete game of the season and fourth in her career. She is 3-1 in the circle when she throws a complete game

Up next, the Tar Heels will face No. 3 Texas on at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
