State patrol ‘aggressively following leads’ in fatal hit and run case
The Colorado State Patrol Friday issued an update on the fatal hit-and-run incident that killed Mario Vildozola Romero of Edwards.
Romero was struck while traveling on U.S. Highway 6 Jan. 7 between 12:30 a.m. and 2 a.m.
The statement from Colorado State Patrol, issued Friday, reads as follows:
“With the assistance of the local community, investigators with the Colorado State Patrol are aggressively following credible leads in this case. The investigation is still active and therefore information remains limited. The State Patrol is asking for patience from Eagle County residents in order to not compromise the investigation and wishes to extend gratitude to all those who have provided tips breathing life into this investigation.”
Master Trooper Gary Cutler said officers are still asking for the public’s assistance with the investigation at this time, and members of the public who have any information that may be helpful to the case can contact Colorado State Patrol dispatch at (970) 945-6198 and reference case number as 4C240104.

“We are still looking for anybody who may have information about this,” Cutler said. “But also, we’ve understood from not only the media but from people in the area that they want to see something happen with this, and we just want to make sure that they also understand that we haven’t moved on from this, our investigators are still working on it, and we are going to do our best to find out who did this.”
Cutler said he’s not able to disclose whether or not investigators have a suspect in the case.
Romero worked at Drunken Goat and Mountain Fish House in Edwards, he is assumed to have been coming home from work on his bicycle Jan. 7 when he was struck and killed. Investigators recovered evidence from the scene which led them to believe Romero was struck by a white 2010-2012 Subaru Legacy or Outback. The driver of the vehicle left the scene; Romero’s bicycle was not recovered and is believed to have been taken from the area.
Romero was discovered two days later down an embankment off the side of U.S. Highway 6 near mile post 165, according to investigators.
A coworker who set up a GoFundMe page for Romero described him as a “valued member of our community, dear friend, father, grandfather, uncle and husband.”
