IS SO SPECIAL. AS PORTLAND CHRISTIAN CELEBRATED ON THURSDAY, THEY SAY THEY ACHIEVED A LOT IN THE FIRST 100 YEARS AND THEY HAVE BIG PLANS FOR THE NEXT 100. FLORA AND SHARON HYDE SAY THEY HAVE PORTLAND CHRISTIAN TO THANK FOR THEIR FRIENDSHIP. THE TWO WOMEN MET WHEN THEY WERE STUDENTS IN THE EARLY 60S. I THINK WE’RE STILL FRIENDS, AREN’T WE? ABSOLUTELY. A LOT HAS CHANGED SINCE THEY GRADUATED, SUCH AS WHERE THE SCHOOL SITS. ITS NOW OFF OF WESTPORT ROAD, MOVING FROM ITS ORIGINAL LOCATION ON PORTLAND AVENUE, WHERE THEY ATTENDED. BUT IN 100 YEARS, THEY SAY THE MISSION HAS STAYED THE SAME AND THEY SAY THE WORD CHRISTIAN WHEN THEY TRY TO FOLLOW THAT 100%. PLUS, YOU KNOW, ON THURSDAY. THE SCHOOL COMMEMORATES 100 YEARS OF EDUCATION WITH ALUMNI, STAFF, FACULTY AND CURRENT STUDENTS. HEAD OF SCHOOL JOSH LESAGE SAYS THEY DID THIS AS A WAY TO HONOR THE PAST AND LOOK TO THE FUTURE, AND SO THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO TELL OUR UPPER SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO WILL BE IN ATTENDANCE TODAY. HEY GUYS, YOU’RE LOOKING AT SOME PEOPLE WHO’VE BEEN HERE FOR THE FIRST 100 YEARS NOW WE’RE PASSING THE TORCH TO YOU TO CONTINUE TO BUILD GOD’S KINGDOM, A CORNERSTONE OF ITS MISSION IN THE PAST CENTURY HELPED KIDS ATTEND REGARDLESS OF THEIR FAMILY’S ABILITY TO PAY. THEY HOPE TO HELP MORE STUDENTS IN THE NEXT 100. THIS YEAR, WE GAVE AWAY THREE QUARTERS OF $1 MILLION IN SCHOLARSHIPS, SHIP FUNDS TO SUBSIDIZE TUITION FOR CHILDREN WHO COULD NOT AFFORD TO GO HERE. WE’RE VERY PROUD OF THAT. AND OUR GOAL NEXT YEAR IS A CAMPAIGN WE CALL MARCH TO A MILLION. AS THEY GROW, STUDENTS HERE SAY THE SCHOOL REMAINS A FAMILY. I KNOW WE’RE GROWING A LOT, WHICH IS GREAT. AND BUT I KNOW PORTLAND WILL STILL KEEP ITS ROOTS AND KEEP ITS LIKE FAMIL

Portland Christian School celebrated 100 years of educating students in the community on Thursday, which was also the 100th day of school. The school first opened along Portland Avenue in 1924 before moving to its location along Westport Road. Their mission is to provide Christian education to students, regardless of a family's ability to pay. As they head into the next 100 years, they hope to continue that mission. "And in fact, this year we gave away three-quarters of $1,000,000 in scholarship funds to subsidize tuition for children who could not afford to go here," said Josh LeSage, the head of school. "We're very proud of that. And our goal next year is a campaign we call March to a Million, because even at three-quarters of $1,000,000, we had families that we had to tell we're sorry the money ran out."He says they also hope to expand the elementary school in the next three to five years.
