The verdict will be pronounced by the court on 17 February. In fact, delhi high court had directed the trial court last month to dispose of the bail plea of Sharjeel Imam by February. Sharjeel was arrested in the communal riot case. The Special Branch of delhi Police had registered a case against Sharjeel under FIR 22 in 2020. Initially a case of treason was registered against him but later Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) was imposed. He has been in custody since january 2020.

Sharjeel had filed a petition in the high court seeking bail on the grounds that he has completed half of the maximum sentence of seven years prescribed under Section 13 of the UAPA. On this, the division bench of Justice suresh Kumar Kait and Justice Manoj Jain, while disposing of Imam's petition for regular bail, said that the application for statutory bail is already under consideration in the trial court. Issuing clear instructions, the court said that we direct the trial court to decide and pronounce the verdict on the application within 10 days from the next date of hearing. The court had also said that if bail is refused, a fresh appeal can be filed.

Sharjeel said this in his appeal

During this time, delhi Police had said in the high court that there is not just one crime registered against Sharjeel but many crimes. Imam, in his appeal, had said that he had spent three years and six months in judicial custody and hence should be entitled to statutory bail under Section 436A of the Code of criminal Procedure. At the same time, as per the time given by the delhi high court, the lower court held the hearing on wednesday and reserved its decision.
