In October, Shepherdsville city leaders broke ground on a new $30 million aquatic center to bring more activities to the area. Mayor Jose Cubero walked us through what's next.
They've made progress since they first broke ground in October. The mayor says the second phase will begin soon.
Cubero discussed the latest designs for the three phase project that will bring an aquatic center, town square, and expansion of the city park to Shepherdsville.
He's excited for this vision to come to life.
Where the aquatic center will be will also feature pickleball courts and a lot more. Construction of the center itself is scheduled to begin in April.
"But it's a terrific project for the city and really a regional aspect of it as far as the accommodations that this facility is going to have," Cubero said.
Other phases will get underway as the aquatic center is being built.
The town square construction will start this spring too, and it's projected to finish next year.
Cubero says they already purchased the property for the square.
"We're seeing probably the first week of March, we're able to actually demolish the property that there and start developing the town square because our town square is going to be actually two blocks," he said.
The city park will also get underway, and will feature an inclusive playground for children with disabilities.
"A lot of pavilions, a lot of picnics, birthday parties, things you want to do here. And this should be done before the year is out," Cubero said.
He says he expects more development in Shepherdsville as the city grows.
"Better shopping, better full-service restaurants, and those things come along on a private side investment when they see what the city's doing," he said.
Mayor Cubero says he expects the aquatic center to be completed by 2026.
