Kansas City parade shooting latest: One dead and 21 people confirmed injured

Authorities are working to connect the surviving victims with their family, said, Kansas City Police Department chief Stacey Graves said at a press conference.

“At the conclusion of the Chiefs’ rally today, there were shots fired on the west side of Union Station.

“Immediately, officers responded to the area, took two people into custody and also immediately rendered life-sustaining aid to those victims.”

At a later briefing, she added: “We have confirmed there is one deceased person. Our gunshot total has went up to 22.

“Right now, we’re still working on the total number of victims. This is still an active investigation.

“We do have three persons detained and under investigation for today’s incident.

“Our investigators are working with all of the surviving victims to connect them with loved ones. We are also working to identify our deceased victim so we can notify their family as soon as possible.”

Radio Station KKFI said on social media that one of their presenters, DJ Lisa Lopez, was killed in the shooting.

KKFI said in a statement: “Our hearts and prayers are with her family. This senseless act has taken a beautiful person from her family and this KC Community.”

The White House confirmed Wednesday that Joe Biden has been briefed on the mass shooting in Kansas City, Missouri that left one person dead and 14 others injured.

“The President has been briefed on the shooting in Kansas City and will continue to receive updates. White House officials have been in touch with state and local leaders, and federal law enforcement is on the scene supporting local law enforcement,” the White House said in a statement.

Kansas City Chiefs fans gathered to celebrate the team’s Super Bowl victory on Sunday.

Those celebrations were interrupted by gunfire on Wednesday afternoon.

Police confirmed that 22 people sustained gunshot injuries during the shooting. Three armed suspects were taken into custody by Kansas City police.

A woman who was at Union Station as the shooting unfolded at the Kansas City Chief’s victory parade says she stood by her father’s side as tackled an alleged third attacker to the ground before police arrived on the scene.

“I turned back around and noticed my dad along with another good Samaritan running, jumping and tackling the second offender,” Alyssa Marsh Contreras said.

“As they tackled him, the weapon fell out. A cop was able to secure that. After that, I just remember yelling, ‘Cops! We need cops over here. Somebody come over here!’”

Kansas City Chief of Police Stacey Graves said she was aware that fans had assisted law enforcement in detaining the suspect, and was still trying to confirm whether one of the three suspects in custody was indeed tackled by members of the public.

Ms Contreras continued: “It all happened so fast. I think the most alarming thing was when we saw cops chasing people and then seeing the young teen or kid just completely coming at us.

“And then I noticed just everybody in the crowd just kind of scatters and runs. So from that moment on, I knew ‘Okay, something wasn’t right’. And so see my little sister along with my older sister just completely run.

“I didn’t want to leave my dad’s side because who knew what could have happened or if they needed help. So I was just there to make sure you know, his hat his phone, his wallet didn’t go missing in the process of him getting this offender down.”
