The commencement of the year-long centenary celebrations of the Uralungal Labour Co-operative Society (ULCCS) marked a momentous occasion, heralded by the esteemed presence of Kerala’s Chief Minister, Mr. Pinarayi Vijayan, amidst a sea of enthusiastic onlookers. The inauguration, a spectacle of unity and pride, served as a testament to ULCCS’s enduring legacy and its profound impact on Kerala’s socio-economic landscape.

In his address, Chief Minister Vijayan lauded ULCCS as a beacon of hope and resilience in the face of modern-day challenges, emphasizing its role as a people-centric alternative to conventional capitalist models. Drawing inspiration from ULCCS’s founder, Guru Vagbhatananda, he extolled the virtues of honesty, integrity, and social commitment that have guided the cooperative since its inception.

The roots of ULCCS trace back to a humble beginning in 1925 when 14 visionary workers, spurred by a fervent desire for social reform, established it in a rural hamlet of the old British Malabar district. Born out of a collective struggle against exploitation, caste discrimination, and social injustice, ULCCS embodied the spirit of resistance and empowerment that defined the era of India’s struggle for independence.

Over the decades, ULCCS blossomed into a formidable force for change, emerging as the second-largest cooperative in the world in the industry and utility sector. With a workforce exceeding 18,000 individuals directly employed and countless others benefiting indirectly, ULCCS stands as a testament to the power of collective action and community-driven development.

Accompanying Chief Minister Vijayan, Co-operation Minister Mr. V. N. Vasavan elaborated on ULCCS’s remarkable journey, highlighting its myriad achievements and contributions to Kerala’s socio-economic fabric. From pioneering initiatives in sustainable development to its unwavering commitment to quality and excellence, ULCCS has carved a niche for itself as a trailblazer in the cooperative movement.

The inauguration ceremony also witnessed the unveiling of a commemorative book titled ‘Uralungal: Stories and Facts,’ penned by journalist Manoj K Puthiyavila. This publication, the first in a series planned for the centenary year, chronicles ULCCS’s storied history and celebrates its enduring legacy of empowerment and progress.

Distinguished guests from various fields, including literature, politics, and academia, graced the occasion, underscoring the significance of ULCCS’s centenary milestone. Cultural performances, exhibitions, and interactive showcases captivated attendees, providing a glimpse into Kerala’s rich cultural heritage and artistic prowess.

Moreover, the unveiling of the centenary logo, brochure, and the launch of a monthly newsletter added to the festivities, symbolizing a renewed commitment to transparency, innovation, and inclusive growth. Preceding the main event, a series of engaging activities such as flash mobs and motorbike rallies ignited public interest and enthusiasm, setting the stage for a year-long celebration of ULCCS’s enduring legacy and future aspirations.
