Sunderland ’Til I Die
Sunderland ’Til I Die Netflix, streaming now TV’s love letter to football returns for its third and final season. As we steel ourselves for the melodic tones of Shipyards one last time, we’ll see Sunderland’s trek back to the Championship via their League One play-off final win against Wycombe Wanderers, under former head coach Alex Neil. And if none of that makes any sense, it doesn’t matter: this docuseries was always more about the fans than football.
Its release back in 2018 was groundbreaking in terms of viewing: not only did it mine the emotions of ardent club supporters, but it humanised footballers and managers, bringing the game to a wider audience. Arguably, it paved the way for Ted Lasso (AppleTV+) plus Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ Welcome to Wrexham (Disney+). With Robbie Williams reportedly priming himself to purchase Port Vale (with an accompanying docuseries) it’s worth spending time with the OG offering, if only to appreciate its authenticity.
Love is Blind
Love is Blind Netflix, streaming now Season six of Vanessa and Nick Lachey simpering over contestants/would-be couples is here, ready to find out if love really is blind. Following a new set of singles from Charlotte, North Carolina — all are ready to forge authentic relationships... until they depart the pods and have to live together.
The New Look AppleTV+, streaming now Based on true events, both Christian Dior (Ben Mendelsohn) and Coco Chanel (Juliette Binoche) engaged in a battle of their own in 1940s Europe — both of which saw themselves as the only designer fit to create a new look that could “rise from the ashes” of WWII. Maisie Williams and John Malkovich also feature.
Players
Players Netflix, streaming now This week’s tenuous ‘Love Meets Sports’ theme continues with this movie starring Gina Rodriguez. She’s a sportswriter who’s had her pick of players. But then she falls for a charming war correspondent Nick (Tom Ellis) and begins to rethink “the game” entirely, etc.
Lover, Stalker, Killer
Lover, Stalker, Killer Netflix, streaming now Happy Valentine’s Week! Glibness aside, being stalked is no joke — particularly when things shift from the internet to IRL. Dave’s scenario involved dabbling in online dating. He told the first woman he met that he was merely up for some mutual fun. Then, he met a second woman, with whom he had a deeper connection. You can guess the rest.
Suncoast
Suncoast Disney+, streaming now Laura Linney and Nico Parker star in this semi-autobiographical story of a teenager who strikes up an unlikely alliance with an eccentric activist, Woody Harrelson.
