Back in the most difficult days of rugby’s transition to a professional sport there was a Super Rugby game involving two of the New Zealand teams where you longed for one of them to kick the ball.

Anywhere. Over any distance. High, low, along the ground, sideways would have been welcome – the kick pass hadn’t been invented at that stage – just to get past the line dancing which the contest had become.
