MG Foods is recalling a Ham & Cotija Torta Sandwich on Telera Roll that contains Rizo-Lopez Foods Inc.'s tainted cotija cheese, citing Listeria monocytogenes concerns, amid the ongoing Listeria outbreak.
The recalled S&S Ham & Cotija Torta Sandwich on Telera Roll comes in 8.3 oz in plastic container with UPC number 100001002017 and use by dates of 02/09/24 to 02/16/24.
The impacted products were distributed between 2/2/24 and 2/9/24. They were sold through vending machines and grab-and-go retail markets within business locations exclusively in Florida.
The recall was initiated as a result of the recent Rizo-Lopez recall of cotija cheese due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes and associated with an outbreak the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is currently investigating.
The multi-year, multistate outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections are linked to queso fresco and cotija cheeses manufactured by Rizo Lopez.
Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
Healthy individuals may suffer short term symptoms like high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. But, it can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
As of now, the FDA has reported total 26 illnesses, including 23 hospitalizations and 2 deaths due to Listeria infections.
Meanwhile, no illnesses have been reported related to MG Foods' recalled product to date. The affected consumers are urged to discard any remaining product immediately, and contact MG Foods for a full refund.
Following Rizo-Lopez recall, many other companies had called back their products, which contain tainted cheese and other dairy ingredients supplied by Rizo Lopez.
Sprouts Farmers Market earlier this week recalled all Chicken Street Taco Meal Kit Units, which include crema cup that contain a recalled cheese ingredient from supplier Rizo-Lopez.
Fresh Creative Foods, a division of Reser's Fine Foods, Inc., last week recalled certain cremas, everything sauces, cilantro cotija dressing, poblano Caesar dressing, cilantro dressing and one taco kit, all made with Rizo Lopez cheese.
Stater Bros. Markets' Chicken Street Taco Kits, Save Mart Companies' Chicken Street Taco Kits and The Perfect Bite Co's Mexican Style Street corn bite were also recalled last week as they include ingredients produced by RLF.
