Cascades & Gorge Winter Storm Warning

Portland metro to see snow levels near 1,000' tonight

PORTLAND, Oregon — All dry in Portland and Vancouver through the 9:00 a.m. commute hour this morning.  Rain will move north up the valley and into the Rose City by the noon hour.  East winds will pick up and become gusty through the gorge 30-45 mph.

Our first significant winter storm in weeks arrives today and continues Thursday. The Cascades and Gorge are under Winter Storm Warnings.  Mt Hood will see 1-2 feet of snow, while the gorge at low elevations along I-84 will see sticking snow this evening through Thursday morning with 4 to 8 inches.  Higher snow amounts will accumulate through the upper Hood River Valley. Cascade snow levels near 3,000 feet today and 2,000 feet or lower Thursday.

Snow will also stick along the east slope of the Coast Range tonight and Thursday morning with 2-6" expected up through 1,500 feet.  I am also watching the chance that east winds will lower snow levels over the valley to near 1,000' tonight, bringing at least the chance of sticking snow to the West Hills and other locations above 500 feet.  Low metro valley locations will hold above freezing with rain or a snow mix in the air.

We catch a break with dry weather Friday, followed by rain showers Friday night and Saturday. Sunday opens up sunbreaks with a shower chance.
