Single and ready to mingle? Here 5 tips when it comes to your first date

Matchmaker and dating coach with DateShape, Jennifer Champion, shares first date tips and strategies for singles looking to find a long-term relationship.

HOUSTON — Long before TV shows and dating apps, matchmakers were one of the most sought after ways to find your partner.

When Matchmaker, Jennifer Champion, read Malcolm Gladwell's, "Tipping Point," more than 20 years ago she knew she was meant to connect.

DateShape began in February 2020. Champion created the DateShape Method for singles who are intentionally dating to meet a long-term relationship that leads to their dating goals.

Champion connects and coaches singles through the first three dates to identify a long-term relationship by date three following the DateShape Method.

The DateShape Method:

1st Date: Set up a coffee, cocktail or mocktail date. Do we vibe and is there energy.

2nd Date: Do an activity to explore personality and character.

3rd Date: Make it personal.

What are good questions to ask on a first date:

  • The DateShape Method suggest being you, authentically you. It is very important on the first date to ask questions that reveal values compatibility.
  • Be mindful to ask questions and not constantly talk about yourselves. Champion often hears women complain about this with men on first dates a lot.
  • You don't have to share everything about yourself on a first date. You just met. Be mindful.
  • Finally, limit a long must-have list to 2 or 3. This is a coaching exercise Champion has with all clients and members at DateShape to intentionally date.
