Snowmass history: Ed Lucks Day

Friends honored instructor Ed Lucks (second from right) with a special “Ed Lucks Day” party at Snowmass on Feb. 16, 1991. Lucks, who worked part-time as a pharmacist for Sundance Drug and a ski instructor for Aspen Skiing Co., is widely regarded for his work with disabled skiers and pioneering adaptive teaching techniques and equipment. He worked closely in the early 1990s with Houston Cowan, one of the co-founders of Challenge Aspen which formed in 1995. In a letter to the editor, he thanked the mayor and townsfolks of Snowmass Village for proclaiming Feb. 16 as “Ed Lucks Day.” He went on to say, “My physically-challenged skiers and I owe so much to so many in the community for what has been accomplished.”
