Chilly morning, but 60s expected for Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day brings lots of sunshine with temperatures reaching 60 degrees, but it will be a cold start.

It's a return to colder mornings on Valentine's Day.

At 4:30 a.m., we were anywhere from 20 to 30 degrees colder than Tuesday morning.

You'll need your heavy jacket heading out the door with widespread temperatures in the 30s to start the day. By 10 a.m., however, we'll be in the mid-40s and the warm up continues into the afternoon.

"Today's going to be nice and quiet," said WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner. "You should enjoy it, especially for this time of year."

For midday and Wednesday afternoon, the weather looks great, with a lot of sunshine and highs around 60. The best hours to be outside will be between noon and 4 p.m.

  • Wednesday: Abundant sunshine and highs in the 60s. No rain in the forecast.
  • Thursday: Partly cloudy, windy and milder. Highs in the lower-mid 60s.
  • Friday: Mostly cloudy and still very mild. Highs in the upper 50s-lower 60s.

Wednesday evening will be chilly, however, with lows dropping into the 30s.

Thursday and Friday will be mild and dry, with highs in the low to mid 60s.

The weekend is cooler with highs in the low 50s. A couple of showers are possible Saturday, but the rest of the holiday weekend is quiet. Monday will be partly sunny with highs in the upper 50s.

Of the two weekend days, Sunday will be drier than Saturday.

  • It's the 10 year anniversary of the snow storm called the Snowpocalypse that took place Feb.12-13, 2014. The snow storm became a meme fest for the Triangle.
  • April 8 will be the next solar eclipse. We won't see it in NC, but lots of people will travel to take it in! Ohio will be the closest spot to drive to from Raleigh.
