The congressman who represents most of St. Mary Parish Clay Higgins has been named as an Impeachment manager in proceedings against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, his office announced Wednesday.
U.S. Rep. Clay Higgins, R-Lafayette will have an active role if the Senate conducts an impeachment trial.
Higgins is the Chairman of the Border Security Subcommittee on the House Homeland Security Committee. Following a year-long investigation, the Homeland Security Committee found that Mayorkas “willfully and systemically refused to comply with federal immigration laws and acted in a manner subversive to the rule of law,” Higgins; office said.
Congressman Higgins helped lead the official impeachment proceedings in committee.
The controversial move against Mayorkas by House Republicans was approved by the full house on a 214-213 vote Tuesday night. Three Republicans voted with House Democrats against impeachment.
An earlier impeachment vote had failed, leading to criticism of House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., for bringing the issue to a vote without assurance that it would pass.
Mayorkas is the first cabinet secretary to be impeached in more than 150 years. Removal from office would require conviction in a Senate trial, considered unlikely because Democrats have a majority there.
