'US needs a president who is mentally fit': Official asks VP Harris to invoke 25th Amendment, remove Biden from office

In yet another blow to President Joe Biden’s candidacy, West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey has written to Vice President Kamala Harris to invoke the 25th Amendment against Biden over concerns over his physical ability to perform the duties of his post.

In a letter to Harris, Morrisey wrote, “President Biden’s cognitive decline is of great concern to Americans, especially during these times that our nation is facing crisis after crisis both here and abroad,” adding that the US needs a president who is “mentally fit.”

Morrisey’s argument comes after a 388-paged special council report was published last week asserting that the president is a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”

Morrisey, a Republican, highlighted that the report “paints a clear picture of a President who is not up for the job.”

What is the 25th Amendment?

The 25th Amendment of the US Constitution was passed by Congress to determine the presidential succession after the assassination of former President John F Kennedy.

It also gives power to the vice president as well as the Cabinet to remove a president from office if they are deemed physically incapable.

Morrisey is not the first person to call for the use of the 25th Amendment against Biden. Earlier, Republican Claudia Tenney and former president Donald Trump floated the idea.

Harris says she is ‘ready to serve’

Earlier this week, VP Harris, in an interview with Wall Street Journal, said that she is “ready to serve” as the president of the US.

“I am ready to serve. There’s no question about that,” Harris said when she was asked whether voters’ concerns about Biden’s age meant she must convince them of her credentials.

Everyone who sees her on the job “walks away fully aware of my capacity to lead,” said Harris, the first Black, South Asian and female vice president in US history.
