Routt County high schools have qualified nine wrestlers for the Colorado High School Activities Association 2024 State Wrestling Tournament in Denver from Thursday to Saturday.
Soroco and Hayden boys each competed at the regional tournament in Cedaredge over the weekend while the Soroco girls were in Grand Junction. Steamboat Springs wrestlers competed in Gunnison.
The top four wrestlers in each weight class from each region advanced to the state competition.
Soroco senior Larhae Whaley has been a force all season in Colorado girls wrestling. With just three losses under her belt this season, she has notched an impressive 36 victories.
At regionals, Whaley made things look easy in class 115 after winning all three bouts by fall, including a pin of Durango’s Brooke Fenberg in 1 minute, 47 seconds in the finals.
Joining Whaley from the Soroco boys team are both Aiden George, 138, and Dash Duksa, 190. Duksa placed third in his class after losing by 7-3 decision to Ty O’Connell of Cedaredge. George won his fifth place match and had a wrestle-back for fourth. He defeated Monty Yarnell of Olathe by technical fall to finish fourth and advance to state.
Steamboat Springs senior Henry Dismuke, 175, was the lone Sailor to qualify for the state tournament following three dominant bouts in his weight class. Dismuke earned his way to the first-place match, where he defeated Aaden Quintana from Centaurus by way of fall in 3:08. Dismuke finishes the regular season with a 22-6 record.
Soroco’s Triston Day, 144, dominated his way to the first-place match before finally being defeated and falling in 54 seconds to Giovonni Aldretti of Walsenburg for second.
At 190, Tommy Weber also reached the first-place match after taking O’Connell down in a grueling 5:50 match. Weber would fall in the final but qualified second in the region for state.
Chase Preston, 120, lost just one of five bouts at regionals. He took third in his class with a 15-4 major decision over Olathe’s Jacob Avila.
Ethan Silva and Logan Silva followed Preston’s lead with two more third-place finishes for Hayden. Ethan, 132, did so with a win by fall over Walker Howell of West Grand in 1:17. Logan’s win by fall over Soroco’s Ethan Lozano secured him the bronze medal at 175.
