What to look for:

When talking about the best boys teams and individuals in San Diego, Torrey Pines is always in the conversation. After all, the Falcons finished second in the team competition and moved on to the state championships in 2023. Torrey Pines fell short of its 10th state championship, however, finishing second to Concord De La Salle.

The Falcons should be in contention for another team title this year. Colin Li won the CIF Boys SoCal Regional last year. Josh Chung placed fourth at the State championships.

In 2024 there is another team to keep an eye on — Cathedral Catholic. The Dons bring back last year’s section champion and player of the year Trevor Cox as well as last year’s runner up, Michael Riebe.

“It’s nice to have such a duo,” said Cathedral coach Joe Filippone. “There’s some pressure to improve on last season.”

Cathedral Catholic finished behind Torrey Pines in the section team championships. Filippone said his top duo and other players want nothing more than to earn a team title.

Filippone’s team includes seniors Santiago Garza and Gavin Fisher, third-year varsity player Cole Newson, a junior, and freshman Frank Zang.
