Walter Sawyer quit high school at the age of 16 and went to work with the advice of his stepfather. He either worked or went on the street. He found a job at a local Hat Company, which lasted only a few days when the Pope said, “Women do not have to wear hats to church.” Walter entered the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 and went to the Great Lakes training center in Illinois before traveling to Boston on board his new ship. Eventually, he ended up at the Panama Canal and the west coast of California.

After leaving the Navy with an Honorable Discharge, he got married and raised three children. Walter worked at General Motors for twenty-seven years. He enlisted in the Massachusetts National Guard and was called up into the U.S. Army for Saudi Arabia. While serving in Germany three years earlier, he got hurt, and the injuries recurred while on active duty in Saudi Arabia.

Walter was sent home on a Mac Flight to the States and was honorably discharged. He served with the United Way and AmeriCorps for the next year, working with Disaster and Mobile Park Communities. He now enjoys the senior way of living with his seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
