Fratelli Beretta USA Recalls RTE Charcuterie Meat Products

Mount Olive, New Jersey-based Fratelli Beretta USA, Inc. is recalling an undetermined amount of ready-to-eat or RTE meat charcuterie products, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service or FSIS.

The recalled products contain Coppa that may be under processed, and may have resulted in a potential contamination with foodborne pathogens.

FSIS, which is investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella, along with with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or CDC and state public health partners, collected unopened RTE Coppa product, which tested positive for Salmonella. However, that product was not released into commerce.

The agency determined with further investigation that the product was under processed.

Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis and the most common symptoms are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 6 hours to 6 days after eating the contaminated product.

Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness, though most people recover without treatment.

The newly recalled products bear establishment number "EST. M47967 or M7543B" inside the USDA mark of inspection and have various best by dates. They were shipped to distributor and retail locations nationwide.

Earlier, the company conducted a recall of charcuterie products on January 3 related to possible Salmonella contamination. Following this, the FSIS had issued a public health alert on January 18 related to additional charcuterie products.

The agency is concerned that some products may still be in retailers' and consumers' refrigerators, and urged them to throw away or return to the place of purchase.

In similar recalls citing salmonella concerns, Quaker Oats Co., affiliated to food and beverage major PepsiCo, Inc., recalled select granola bars in December as well as in January.

In December, TGD Cuts, LLC recalled specific fresh-cut fruit cup, clamshell and tray products that contained cantaloupes from Sofia Produce, LLC dba Trufresh, which were called back earlier amid a Salmonella outbreak.
