Bangladesh PM orders steps to ensure GI certification for key products

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recently instructed the official concerned to initiate steps towards obtaining Geographical Indication (GI) certification for crucial national products.

Media reports claimed this adding the Prime Minister’s directives were issued during the routine cabinet meeting held at the PM’s Office in capital Dhaka.

Briefing the pressmen after the meeting, cabinet secretary Mahbub Hossain said the Prime Minister had called upon all the stakeholders concerned to be proactive in pursuing the GI certification for Bangladeshi products.

In tandem, the Department of Patents, Designs, and Trademarks (DPDT) has instructed deputy commissioners and divisional commissioners across the country’s districts to undertake necessary measures regarding GI products.

During the meeting, industries minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun presented GI certificates for tangail sarees along with other products to the Prime Minister.

These certifications hold significance considering recent reported GI recognition granted by the Indian government to tangail sarees, with claims that the product originates from West Bengal, India.
