Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar cleared the floor test for his coalition government with the BJP in the Bihar Assembly on Monday with 130 votes. The opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal and Congress coalition had walked out after making fiery speeches.

The halfway mark in the 243-member Assembly was 122 but the ruling coalition surpassed it with 8 more votes. The need for the trust vote came after Nitish Kumar switched from the RJD-Congress alliance and hitched his badwagon again with the BJP after breaking ties with it in 2022. Nitish Kumar then took oath as the Chief Minister for the ninth time with BJP support. He also visited Delhi and met PM Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Bharat Ratna awardee LK Advani on his short visit last week.

The RJD-Congress had dared Nitish to prove his strength in House. The entire debacle had started when Nitish is said to have taken slight, reports said, when he was not named the convenor of the INDI alliance. He then resigned as chief minister on January 28.

The JD(U) has 45 MLAs in the 243-membered Bihar assembly. The BJP and Hindustani Awam Morcha-Secular (HAM-S), have 79 and 4 legislators respectively. The RJD had 75 MLAs, and the Congress 19 legislators. Before the trust vote, the no-confidence motion against Speaker Awadh Bihari Chaudhary of the RJD was taken up and passed by the assembly, and 125 members voted in favour of the ouster.

Nitish Kumar addressed the assembly and took a swipe at the RJD and stated the oft-repeated charge against it that it is a corrupt entity. He added the NDA government is going to carry out an investigation into these practices.

Bihar Governor Rajendra Arlekar on Monday said the rule of law was the top priority of the Nitish Kumar government. He added the strength of the police force has to be increased to improve the law and order situation.

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and Congress leader Ashok Chavan resigned from the party on Monday, in another setback to the INDI alliance, months ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. This development comes days after senior Mumbai Congress Leaders Baba Siddiqui and Milind Deora quit the party.

Chavan handed his one-line resignation to Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee chief Nana Patole. He said he submitted his resignation from primary membership of the Indian National Congress Party with effect from noon on 12/02/2024. Chavan also sent his resignation as MLA to the Speaker.

Speaking to the media, Chavan said he tendered his resignation as MLA as well as from all posts in the Congress. He said he will decide what is to be done ahead in a couple of days. He said he had worked for the Congress all his life but now he is looking for options.

Reports suggest the BJP is likely to offer a Rajya Sabha seat to Chavan. Around 10-12 MLAs are also in touch with Chavan and are expected to switch sides shortly. BJP leader and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said in his reaction to the reaction to the resignation that one has to wait and watch what will happen next.

Fadnavis said he had heard about Ashok Chavan from the media. He said the only thing that he can say now is that many good leaders from Congress are in touch with the BJP. Fadnavis said those leaders who are connected with the masses are feeling an urge to leave the party.

Ashok Chavan served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from December 2008 to November 2010. He was considered an influential leader of the Congress in Maharashtra. He stepped down in 2010 over the Adarsh Society housing scam in Mumbai. Chavan was replaced by Prithviraj Chavan.
