Despite being the backbone of the country, farmers often struggle due to various factors like market fluctuations, unfavourable climate conditions, and exploitation by traders. This situation has led to a perception that young people, especially those educated and aspiring for a better life, are reluctant to enter the agricultural sector and are hesitant to marry into farming families.

Even among farmers themselves, there is a reluctance to marry their daughters to fellow farmers. The perception is rooted in the belief that agriculture involves labour-intensive work, uncertainty, and comparatively lower income compared to other professions. Farmers prefer their daughters to marry someone with a stable monthly income, often favouring government employees. This sentiment is not limited to a specific region but is observed across the country.

An illustration of this issue recently surfaced in karnataka, a state known for its agricultural activities and the IT industry. Farmers' associations in karnataka have petitioned chief minister Siddaramaiah, urging him to provide a Rs. 5 lakh incentive for those who marry farmers. The representatives cited the challenges faced by young farmers, who, even at the age of 45, are struggling to find suitable matches due to the perceived difficulties associated with agriculture.

The representatives hope that such financial incentives will encourage more people to consider farming as a viable and respectable profession. The plea for incentives reflects the broader issue of changing perceptions and the need to revitalize the agricultural sector to attract the younger generation.
