Ponda: In yet another accident, Nifa Joan Fernandes, a 26-year-old girl from Rivona in Quepem taluka died on the spot as she fell from a scooter on which she was riding pillion at Dharbandora at around 7.30 pm on Monday.

Ponda police said the accident occurred on the Ponda-Belgaum highway near the deputy collector’s office as the rider Jolly Fernandes from Uguem in Sanguem taluka lost control over the scooter bumped over a speedbreaker as a result of which the girl got tossed in the air, fell on the road head first and sustained serious injuries.

Soon, the girl was shifted to a nearby hospital but was declared brought dead.

The duo was proceeding towards Sanguem from Khandepar after attending a birthday party. The rider has escaped with minor injuries.

Eyewitnesses said that the rider was overspeeding when the accident occurred.

An accident case has been registered and further investigation is in progress.
